Saturday, September 28th

Café con Leche Plenary:
9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Morning Sessions:
10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Spanish Media Roundtable:   Partnering with Media Outlets to Achieve Success: Spanish-language media reaches millions of Latinos in the New York metro area and across the nation.  The news coverage from Spanish outlets ensures this community gets the attention it needs and deserves and serves to educate the community and public at-large on pressing issues and important events and programs. This workshop will serve as a forum to discuss the strategies on the best ways to partner with Spanish media outlets to educate the public, spread the word about events and programs, and advance important community causes.

The Path to Job Growth:   Economic Development and Job Opportunities in Latino Communities: The unemployment rate for Latinos in New York is 10.6 percent as of 2012; far higher than the 7 percent rate prior to the 2008 Great Recession. For too many Latino families across the state, the situation has gone from bad to worse with declining household income and growing living expenses.  This workshop will feature experts in New York economic development initiatives and include discussions about job opportunities that are emerging in various Latino communities.

Líderes Luncheon: 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Afternoon Sessions:  2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Striving for a Healthy New York:   The Fight Against HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis-C & Substance Abuse: Latinos are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. Moreover, the battle against substance abuse has ensnared a generation of young Latinos. This workshop will address the high rates of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis-C and substance abuse amongst Latinos and identify successful community-based reform efforts and public policies needed to promote solutions to Latino health care needs.

CUNY Youth Roundtable:   Public Service as a Path to Making an Impact on New York: The special roundtable will bring together distinguished members of the New York State Senate Leadership and students from CUNY colleges for a conversation on public service through internships and volunteerism.  The presentation will address the personal and community merits of public service activities and cover the range of government, non-profit and other venues where students can pursue valuable internships and volunteer opportunities. Moreover, the session will allow students and leaders working with youth the chance to discuss and hear about the real impact these internships have on New Yorkers’ lives and broader public policy.

New York’s Economic Recovery:   Challenges & Opportunities for Latino Small Businesses: With over 200,000 Hispanic-owned businesses across the state, our community has a big stake in our economic recovery.  Hispanic businesses have been central to New York’s slow turnaround and have generated over $18 billion in sales.  Unfortunately, Latino entrepreneurs face unique barriers and are often left out of state and local economic investment efforts.  Following up on last year’s workshop and list of recommendations, small business leaders and advocates will reconvene to assess their progress in reducing barriers to economic activity and highlight what must be done to better support the sector.

Farewell Reception  4p.m. – 6 p.m.
